About
I work mainly on the anatomy and systematics of late Paleozoic and Mesozoic gymnosperms and pteridophytes, although I have published on various other plant groups from the Devonian to present. I am interested in the evolutionary relationships amongst seed-plants, particularly glossopterids and Mesozoic seed-ferns and their links to early angiosperms. I have particular interests in the Southern Hemisphere Permian-Cretaceous floras dominated by Glossopteridales, Corystospermales and Bennettitales. I also have broad interests in the application of plant fossils to biostratigraphy, paleoecology, paleoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic analysis, and paleobiogeography. Together with my partner, Vivi Vajda, I also work on the palaeobotanical signatures of mass-extinction events. On occasions I dabble in aspects of fluvial sedimentology, geomorphology, the biogeography of extant plants, and even palaeozoology. I am currently the chief editor of the Australasian paleontological journal Alcheringa.
